Olympic and world champion boardsailor Barbara Kendall is one of 44 athletes worldwide nominated to be one of eight International Olympic Committee ambassadors.
Kendall, who won gold at Barcelona in 1992 and silver at the last Olympics in Atlanta, is the only New Zealander nominated for the year-long post as an advocate for the concerns of Olympic athletes throughout the world.
She joins the likes of Australian multi-Olympic swimming champion Susie O'Neil, Russian pole vault legend Sergei Bubka and swimmer Alexander Popov as candidates for the post.
IOC delegates are expected to make their vote soon.
With her focus solely on the Sydney Olympics, Kendell conceded yesterday that she knew little of the detail about her nomination.
However, if selected she was clear on her role.
"We would assess what are some improvements that can be made for athletes at the Olympic Games, such as accommodation, uniforms and allowances and sussing out the campus - stuff like that."
