Rob Waddell's golden row at the Sydney Olympics continued a long list of successes by Herald junior sports award winners.
Other former winners who competed in Sydney included Sarah Ulmer, Chris Dickson, Beatrice Faumuina, Sarah Macky, Daniel Slater, Karen Li and Laura Robertson.
The awards, first made in 1968, reward not only sporting excellence but may also recognise sporting achievements by the disabled.
The Herald will make five awards. Each winner will receive a $1000 training grant and a medallion. The judges may also highly commend up to three other nominees. All winners and their coaches and parents will be guests at a luncheon in the New Year.
Applications are now being sought from athletes aged under 20 at December 31 and living in the Herald's circulation area.
There is no application form, but details including full name, date of birth, address and a description (up to 400 words) of the performances to be considered must be sent to NZ Herald Junior Sports Awards, PO Box 32, Auckland or e-mailed to terry_maddaford@herald.co.nz by December 31. All applications must be signed by the applicant and counter-signed by a coach, parent, headmaster or club secretary.
