KEY POINTS:
New Zealand's top-ranked triathlete Bevan Docherty showed continuing good form to finish second in the Des Moines Iowa triathlon in the United States yesterday.
Docherty posted a time of 1h 54min 29sec, 8sec behind Danish winner Rasmus Henning.
Showing particular strength in the final stages of the race, Docherty sprinted clear of Australian Greg Bennett in the last 300m but was unable to close the gap to Henning.
He picked up US$40,000 ($53,206) in prizemoney in what is the richest World Cup event, while Henning took away US$200,000.
Yesterday's success comes two weeks after Docherty won a silver medal at the world championships in Canada, and bodes well for his hopes at the Olympic Games in Beijing in August.
Fellow Olympic Games-bound New Zealander Shane Reed finished 17th in a time of 1h 57min 22sec.
Australia took a 1-2 in the women's race. Emma Snowsill won in 2:03.15, 1min 20sec ahead of compatriot Emma Moffatt.
