New Zealand Rugby is tackling the issue of mental illness and the stigma associated with it.
The governing body of the game's most popular code intends to launch of a website and social media campaign targeting the rugby community's mental health.
NZR says the website, www.headfirst.co.nz, will offer players, parents, coaches, referees, volunteers and supporters a resource to get information about mental fitness, mental health and wellbeing.
The campaign features stories from All Blacks test centurion Keven Mealamu, All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith, Black Ferns Sevens player Ruby Tui, former Chiefs and Junior All Blacks prop James McGougan, the Sunwolves' Liaki Moli and former international referee Chris Pollock.
NZR education manager Dr Nathan Price said New Zealand has sobering statistics around mental health in which one in five Kiwis experience mental illness each year. New Zealand's youth suicide rate is also one of the highest in the OECD.
