Jimmy Garoppolo has just seven starts in the NFL to his name, but the San Francisco 49ers have made the quarterback the league's highest-paid player per year.
The 49ers acquired Garoppolo from the New England Patriots late in the 2017-18 season. Garoppolo took on the duties as starting QB with five games to go in the campaign, and the 49ers finished with five straight wins.
That was enough of a sample size for the franchise to offer the 26-year-old a five-year contract worth NZ$190 million, NFL Network reported, at an average of NZ$38 million each year.
His contract surpasses the mark set by Detroit Lions counterpart Matthew Stafford, who signed a five-year, NZ$187 million deal in August last year, averaging NZ$37 million per season. Garoppolo has NZ$125 million in guarantees through the first three years of the contract, which is also the largest total in NFL history.
