NFL: Hayne makes 49ers final roster

Jarryd Hayne will spend the 2015 NFL season with the San Francisco 49ers after he was this morning confirmed of a spot on their 53-man roster.

On a morning where every player set to be cut receives a phone call, the deadline passed without Hayne receiving the bad news, confirming his spot on the squad.

The former rugby league star has made a big impression during the NFL pre-season, combining electrifying punt returns with some solid moments at running back. He ranked third in the NFL pre-season with 163 punt-return yards on nine attempts.

Hayne is expected to function largely as a punt returner for the 49ers during the regular season, while also potentially getting a few handoffs at running back behind the impressive young Carlos Hyde and veteran Reggie Bush.

The 49ers' first game of the season is against the Minnesota Vikings next Tuesday afternoon (NZT).
