Byron Kelleher has been rejuvenated after a month-long break in Thailand and is keen to claim the top All Blacks halfback spot this year.
It was his longest break from rugby since 1997 and he relished the chance to recharge his batteries.
"I got away from rugby and everyone involved in the game on the islands off Thailand," he said.
"I went for the odd run but really did nothing," he said. "'I enjoyed life and it rejuvenated me."
Kelleher also had three weeks off at the end of last year's NPC and the time away enabled his niggling hamstring injuries to come right.
"It gave my injuries and body a break and enabled me to get my fitness levels up to the maximum," he said.
The break also gave Kelleher the chance to spend time with his family.
"I got to see my little 2-year-old girl, Grace, and spend quality time with her," Kelleher said.
Being injury-free has enabled Kelleher to lift his fitness level, which he believes now compares with the 1998 season, when he made his mark on the national scene.
"I had three weeks' training with Andre [Richardson] before Christmas and my fitness levels have shot through the roof," Kelleher said.
He has also added 3kg of muscle with weight training, which is giving him a good foundation for this year's season.
Kelleher has learned the hard way that coming back from injuries too soon does not pay.
"I have to learn to be patient and not come back too early," he said.
"You have to look after your injuries and make sure you do not come back until you are 100 per cent."
Kelleher intends to enjoy his rugby this year, and reach a level in his game that lets him enjoy the atmosphere and the team environment.
"It is a big year for Otago rugby," Kelleher said.
"We need to perform well to make sure the franchise stays in the Super 12."
His goal for this year is to make the All Blacks team for the World Cup.
"There has been enough mucking around," he said. "It is time to do the work."
