GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) Reigning world series champion New Zealand emerged unbeaten from pool play Saturday on the opening day of the Gold Coast Sevens tournament, the first round of this season's International Rugby Board world circuit.
New Zealand beat the United States 38-0 in the first match of the new season then went on to beat Tonga 26-0 and Kenya 31-0 to qualify from Pool A for Sunday's quarterfinals.
South Africa topped Pool B, beating France 29-5, Spain 38-7 and England 22-14. Fiji edged Wales for first place in Pool C, though it lost 22-19 to Wales in its final pool match.
Australia beat Samoa 12-0 in its last Pool match to top Pool D.
New Zealand will play Samoa, Fiji will play England, Australia will play Kenya and South Africa will play Wales in Sunday's quarterfinals.
