Southern Steel shooter Donna Wilkins is hopeful of playing in the first round of netball's transtasman competition after breaking her wrist on Saturday.
Former Silver Ferns star Wilkins, returning to the sport after 18 months while she had her first baby, suffered the injury during a pre-season tournament in Queenstown.
A scan yesterday put her recovery at about four weeks, rather than the six weeks she first feared which would have definitely seen her miss their competition-opening match against the Central Pulse in Invercargill on April 4.
"It was a bit more positive (than expected)," Wilkins told The Southland Times.
"It was exactly what they thought it was (a chip off one of the carpal bones) and I just have to have a cast for four weeks then see where it's at."
The Steel's assistant coach last year, Wilkins said she had enjoyed her return to the court until the "pretty devastating" injury.
