Two new caps from Canterbury are the feature of a Silver Ferns netball squad named today for a test series against the World 7 next week.
Defender Larrissa Willcox is a shock selection while shooter Anna Thompson has also been included among 12 players announced for the three-test series following trials in Wellington this week. The first test is in Wellington on Monday.
Another highlight is the return of midcourter Temepara George, who had made herself unavailable for more than a year.
Willcox, 26, has come from obscurity to be selected ahead of veteran Sheryl Scanlan as one of the four defenders.
A member of Australian franchise the West Coast Fever last year, she impressed for the Canterbury Tactix in limited appearances in this season's trans-Tasman championship.
Coach Ruth Aitken opened the door to her as one of four players "invited" to the trials where she has impressed enormously.
Aitken believed Willcox's confidence and tenacity will be an asset.
"Larrissa has shown great drive and determination on and off the court," Aitken said.
After being selected for the New Zealand greater squad last year, Thompson has gone one step further. She brought notable movement to the Canterbury Tactix circle during this year's ANZ Championship.
"Anna is a versatile player who has the ability to switch between goal attack and wing attack," Aitken said.
"She is a clever player who reads the game well and has a great eye when it comes to passing into space."
After two years away from the international stage, George's experience and skill makes a welcome return, Aitken said.
"Temepara has continued to show a high level of skill, composure and flair. We look forward to seeing the exciting dynamic she will bring to the Silver Fern midcourt."
