Silver Ferns captain Casey Williams has been ruled out of tonight's opening test against Australia with a calf strain.
Williams pulled up sore after one of Ferns training sessions earlier in the week and sat out yesterday's final shakedown.
New Zealand coach Ruth Aitken said she would take a cautious approach with Williams as she did not want to risk further injury to the team's captain.
A call would be made at a later time if Williams is available for Sunday's second and final test in Auckland.
Anna Scarlett will start at goal defence tonight in place of Williams, while Leana de Bruin, who was named MVP in the transtasman league, will start at goal keep.
