Silver Ferns captain Anna Rowberry is in doubt for the test series against England in March.
Rowberry had surgery in July to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee that she ruptured in the Silver Ferns' third test against Australia that month.
Although the 28-year-old has been back at the gym and running for some time, she still feels only about 80 per cent right and not totally capable of the movements normally required on the netball court.
"I am not wanting to make any speedy return until I know that I am fully fit and fully confident."
The Silver Ferns go into a three-day camp on February 11 where trials will be held to help determine the side who will take on England in the three-test series that starts in Auckland on March 12.
"I haven't made an informed decision yet ... but it is looking likely that I probably won't trial which means I won't be available for the March series."
Silver Ferns coach Ruth Aitken could include Rowberry in the squad and see how she feels closer to the series.
But considering that the England team are not expected to pose the Silver Ferns too many problems, it would probably be wise for Rowberry to sit out the series.
She could then save herself for the two matches against Australia in June and October.
There are also the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne next year to consider.
"I sort of think if I am not ready by February to be trialling then there is no way I'd be able to play in a test series a month later," she said.
"My physios, trainers and surgeon have all given me really good advice on the fact that you don't want to come back too early.
"I am kind of at that stage in my career where I don't want to risk it," Rowberry said.
"I may only have another two years left in me.
"Why come back and play a series against England when 12 months later we will be playing in the Commonwealth Games, and for me that is a bigger target to be ready for," Rowberry said.
Aitken said they would assess Rowberry during the camp before making a decision on her availability for the series.
"There are three weeks between this camp and when we re-group for the Fisher and Paykel Series, and obviously we would take this into consideration," Aitken said.
"It is most important, however, that the best decision is made for Anna's long-term welfare, and that she returns when she feels ready."
