Netball: Injured Silver Fern Kelly Jury makes impact felt off-court

Injury might be keeping Kelly Jury from making an impact on the netball court, but it hasn't stopped her from influencing the next generation.

The Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic and Silver Ferns defender hand-delivered preloved and repurposed netballs to three schools in Auckland today.

The balls were a combination of some used at recent Netball New Zealand workshops and some sporting brand Gilbert had donated in need of a new home.

"I'm so glad to see these pre-loved netballs are going to good new homes," Jury said. "I'm sure the children will love them and put them to good use."

Jury, 21, has been kept on the sidelines for most of the ANZ Premiership season after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the second round of the competition.

The defender needed surgery to repair a tear, with her recovery expected to take nine months. As a result, she was ruled out for the remainder of the Silver Ferns 2018 campaign.

The donation initiative was run as part of Netball New Zealand's Mother Earth FutureFERNS programme. The programme caters for over 67,000 young netballers throughout New Zealand.

The delivery initiative visited six schools in total across Auckland and the Waikato which participate in Mother Earth's sponsored Enviroschools programme - encouraging young Kiwis to plan, design and implement a wide range of sustainability projects in collaboration with their communities.

"I had such a great day supporting this amazing initiative. What better way of encouraging kids to stay active and think about sustainability," Jury said.
