Netball: Adelaide Thunderbirds fans slam Maria Folau signing for past homophobic comments

Adelaide Thunderbirds fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment at the signing of Maria Folau because of the Silver Ferns star's homophobic views.

The Thunderbirds confirmed today that Folau will be joining the team for the 2019 Australian Super Netball competition.

While some fans were positive about the addition of the Kiwi shooting sensation, others were quick to express their disapproval of the Thunderbirds signing a player who has, in the past, supported the controversial comments of her husband - and Wallabies fullback - Israel Folau.

The sporting couple came under controversy earlier this year after Israel's controversial statements about gays being going to hell, while Maria supported her husband and his stance.

The Ferns shooter relocated across the Tasman to be with her husband.

"So disappointed @AdelaideTBirds," one fan posted on Twitter. "She's been very outspoken about her issues with anyone who isn't heterosexual and therefore I can't support the team. Is it worth a win to spread ignorance and hatred?"

Several fans posted similar comments slamming the Thunderbirds and Folau.

"It would be really great if you could be transparent about the steps you've taken to ensure your LGBTIQ players and fans feel both safe and comfortable with this decision. As well as the training Folau will be undergoing in light of her comments," another fan said.

"There should be no room for homophobia in SSN," said another.

Folau, who played nine seasons with the Mystics, was granted an exemption from Netball New Zealand to play in the Super Netball competition while still being available for Silver Ferns selection.

I think Maria is an great player that could bring a lot to the club experience-wise, but I’m not going to lie... Her signing makes me deeply uncomfortable.

I respectfully disagree; this shows any fans, whether they are LGBTQI or not, that the @AdelaideTBirds are okay with her stance and are willing to overlook it to have a better season than 2018.
