In a shock decision, Yvonne Willering has been dumped as New Zealand netball coach and replaced by Waikato's Ruth Aitken.
The change of coach will be confirmed in a special announcement from Auckland today but North Island netball sources have said Willering has lost her job.
Aitken, who coached Waikato in the NPC, Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in the Coca-Cola Cup, as well as New Zealand A and Academy teams this year, would not confirm her appointment yesterday.
"I think you'd better contact [Netball New Zealand chief executive] Shelley McMeeken, really," said Aitken, who is also one of the five national selectors.
Aitken was a member of the Silver Ferns at the world championships in Trinidad and Tobago in 1978.
Willering could not be reached last night but earlier yesterday said a "slight hiccup" had knocked her confidence about retaining the Silver Ferns position she had held since 1997. She had been in charge of the Silver Ferns for 55 games for a record of 43 wins, 11 losses and one draw.
