Silver Ferns captain Anna Rowberry is pleased with the progress of her injured knee but is not rushing back into netball.
The 83-test veteran ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament in the third game of the 3-0 clean sweep against Australia in New Zealand in July.
The injury could not have come at a worst time for Rowberry, 28, the leader of a Silver Ferns team who had finally gained some dominance over their Australian counterparts.
"I'm quite keen to just write off this year," she said.
"I've gone from not really having any injuries to breaking my arm earlier in the year and having this (knee injury)."
The midcourter was not prepared to rush back and has targeted the start of next season for a possible return.
"I've got to think of life after netball.
"I don't want to have to walk around with a bung knee when I get old."
It has been two months since Rowberry had an operation on her injured left knee and she has been able to call on a familiar face for advice.
Southern Sting and Silver Ferns goal shoot Tania Dalton had to undergo the same operation when she injured her knee in round two of the National Bank Cup this year.
"We've been able to have a laugh at each other," Rowberry said.
"But it is good to be able to train with someone and talk about where it is hurting and what not."
The Silver Ferns meet Australia for a series, in Australia, in November and the New Zealand team would have to be on top of their game if they were to match the feats of the July series, Rowberry said.
"It has been going really well but to beat Australia, in Australia, is a different story."
