Netball New Zealand is considering introducing midweek National Bank Cup games to enhance the sport's profile and reduce clashes with other codes.
The organisation met representatives of the country's eight franchises in Auckland on Monday to discuss the future of the premier domestic competition.
The franchises supported Netball NZ's proposal of expanding the competition to a double round, and a decision on whether the revamped competition will start next year or in 2007 is expected this month.
The concept of mid-week games was also raised.
Netball NZ chairman Don Mackinnon said the idea was aimed at reducing the number of weekend games which clashed with rugby's Super 12 and league's NRL.
"But also there is a real interest in seeing more netball both live and on television. It is just another way that we, hopefully in the future, can grow the product."
Mackinnon said Television New Zealand, which had the broadcast rights until 2008, had shown interest.
But the concept was probably a little way off and the real issue for franchises at the moment was their ability to cope with two rounds.
"To then put further demands on them through midweek games might be a big ask in the initial stages of a two-round competition."
Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic business manager Sheryl Dawson said that while the idea had its merits, the logistics for players and volunteers had to be considered.
"It would affect players in their employment and their studies," she said.
"It is a great idea. We have seen some successful mid-week netball in our regions but I don't know how that can translate into the National Bank Cup."
