KEY POINTS:
Star goal shooter Sharelle McMahon has been appointed the new captain of the Australian netball team.
McMahon, 30, succeeds Liz Ellis, who retired after Australia's world championship win last year.
McMahon, vice-captain since 2004, said she was honoured to follow in the footsteps of former national captain Ellis, Vicki Wilson, Kathryn Harby-Williams and Anne Sargeant.
"The Australian netball team has a long and fantastic tradition of strong leaders as captain, so to be named among them is a great honour," said McMahon, also captain of the Melbourne Vixens in the transtasman netball competition.
She will officially take the leadership reins in October, when Australia play two tests against England and two against New Zealand.
