The Magic have saved ANZ Championship officials further blushes by ousting the Southern Steel from the play-offs with a hard-fought extra time win in Hamilton this afternoon.
The Steel's presence in the finals series was the subject of much scorn after the southerners secured their place in the New Zealand elimination final on the back of a 23% winning record this season.
With the winner of today's match guaranteed a place in the ANZ Championship semifinals, had the Steel advanced it would have only opened up the already much-maligned conference system to further ridicule.
While the Magic also have a modest winning record this year, they have at least proven to be more competitive against the Australian sides, and are the only Kiwi team to have beaten a transtasman rival this year.
For a while there it was looking like the Waikato-Bay of Plenty side's presence in the play-offs this season would be short-lived, with the Steel holding a handy seven goal advantage late in the third quarter. But the Magic, who led 30-28 at halftime, produced a strong comeback over the final quarter, with a committed defensive effort limiting the quick feeds into the Steel's key strike weapon - 1.98m Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid.
