KEY POINTS:
First dibs on the world championships will almost certainly go to the country that can host the tournament before the Rugby World Cup next year.
While moving the championships - taken off Fiji following the coup - to 2008 is a possibility, International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) vice-president Kereyn Smith said their guidelines stated that the champs should not be held in an Olympic year.
The IFNA decided three years ago junior and elite championships would be held in July.
They don't want the championships competing for attention with the Rugby World Cup during September and October, which has put the pressure on the Australian and New Zealand netball bodies.
Jamaica and England are thought to be long shots at best.
Netball New Zealand and Netball Australia spokespeople told the Herald on Sunday they expected to be able to announce something towards the end of next week.
Netball Australia could host the championships at short notice but are in a tricky political position. Melbourne is competing against Singapore to host the 2011 championships and would not like a hastily arranged tourney to jeopardise that bid.
"The decision was to have been made in Suva actually, but the timeframe is still the same and we will announce the 2011 host in July next year," Smith said.
New Zealand's problems are more logistical. Waitakere Stadium could host the event, but its 6000 capacity is dwarfed by the likes of the Sydney Events Centre.
Mystery Creek is fine for provincial tournaments and Vector Arena has proven to be nothing but an embarrassment to Auckland.
"We still would like to make an announcement before Christmas," Smith said.
