Netball: Broughton new Pulse coach

Former Southern Steel coach Robyn Broughton will take the helm of the Central Pulse in next year's trans-Tasman netball league.

Broughton, who did not reapply for the Steel job when it was advertised after this season, takes over from Yvette McCausland-Durie who stepped down at the Pulse after three years in the role.

Broughton who grew up in Wellington, said she was keen to make her mark with the Pulse.

"I am extremely excited about the new challenges, new team and new management. I can't wait to start the 2012 season and look forward to returning to Wellington," she said.

Pulse chief executive, Chris McNay said they were thrilled to have secured Broughton.

"We are delighted to have the service of a coach with such an outstanding record and welcome her on to our team as one of the most respected coaches in New Zealand.

"Robyn's record as a coach speaks for itself and I am sure that the players and fans alike will embrace her with open arms. I am looking forward to 2012 and am very sure that the appointment will help us in our recruitment of players for the forthcoming season."

Broughton took the Steel to the playoffs on two occasions after coaching the side sicne the inception of the trans-Tasman league in 2008.

Previously, she led the Invercargill-based Southern Sting to seven national titles in 10 years at the helm. Her international coaching highlights include taking New Zealand to the World Fastnet title in 2010, coaching a World 7 to victory over the Australian Diamonds in 2009 and three years as assistant coach to the Silver Ferns.

Her appointment was welcomed by Pulse captain Katrina Grant: "I have always looked up to Robyn as a coach and am excited to work with her again."
