Australian netball's worst fears were formalised today when it was confirmed a career-threatening injury has ruled inspirational captain Sharelle McMahon out of July's world championships.
The 118-cap shooter's unavailability is hardly surprising after the 33-year-old ruptured an Achilles tendon while playing in the trans-Tasman championship for the Melbourne Vixens last Thursday.
McMahon underwent surgery the following day but realistically she was never likely to feature in Australia's defence of the world crown in Singapore.
"It's heartbreaking to realise I won't be captaining the Diamonds at the world championships," she said, expressing full confidence in coach Norma Plummer's eventual squad.
"I have every confidence in the depth and strength of Australian netball and will be the biggest fan and supporter from the sidelines."
McMahon was noncommittal about her future in the sport, saying it would depend on the impact of her injury and a recovery process which could take up to a year.
Plummer reiterated her disappointment at being denied McMahon's experience for the sport's pinnacle event.
"It's terribly disappointing for the kid. She'd been playing and moving so well and it seems very unfair. I thought she'd had her fair share of injuries.
"It's up to the other players to step up now - I believe we have the mental toughness, discipline and will to win the world championships and the loss of Sharelle means an opportunity for someone else to make their mark."
Susan Pratley and Natalie Medhurst appear to have the inside running for McMahon's goal attack bib, although Plummer has also been impressed with uncapped Swifts shooter Carla Dziwoki.
Meanwhile, McMahon said she had been humbled by the messages of support from fans around Australia.
"It's lovely to know that so many people out there are supporting me and sending their best wishes for my recovery. It has really helped during this time and I'm very appreciative."
