Kelly Slater's mother will attend the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii for the first time in more than a decade as her son attempts to crush Australia's Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning by grabbing one more world title for the road.
Slater, now 40, is expected to announce his retirement from full-time competition at the end of the event and the arrival on the North Shore from Florida of his mother, Judy, is another indisputable sign that the end is nigh for one of the most dominant athletes in the history of professional sport.
He has been crowned ASP world champion a record 11 times, including five consecutive titles from 1994-98. He is both the youngest (at 20) and the oldest (at 39) to win a world championship.
Slater's heavyweight stoush against Parkinson and Fanning is expected to begin at Pipeline today with sizeable north-west swells forecast to slam on to the famous reef.
"There's always pressure, mostly from myself, but I feel good heading into this event," Slater said. "It looks like we have some good swells on tap for the window with really good winds.
