New Zealand triathlete Hamish Carter overcame a tyre puncture to win the Xterra multisport world championships in Makena, Hawaii, today.
Carter completed the 1.5km swim, 30km mountain bike and 11km trail run in a time of two hours 42 minutes 36 seconds, 19sec ahead of French rival Olivier Marceau.
He was among the leaders for the entire race, coming out of the water just behind Canadian Brent McMahon, before taking the lead on the bike leg.
A puncture to his back tyre 2km from the end of that leg left him 1min off the pace but he rallied to eventually pull clear.
Carter, the 2002 Olympic gold medallist who won a silver medal at the world triathlon championships in Switzerland in September, has questioned his future participation in major international triathlons.
At 35, he has suggested his days of competing at world championships level is behind him but has yet to clearly indicate his intentions.
