Saturday's weather debacle hasn't stopped Taupo being confirmed as the home of Ironman New Zealand until 2011, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) announced today.
WTC, owners of the Ironman brand, today confirmed a five-year agreement with Taupo District Council which will take a direct involvement in the running of the event which has been staged in Taupo since 1999.
Saturday's event was marred by foul weather which caused the swimming leg on Lake Taupo to be cancelled for safety reasons.
"We are delighted to see the event retained in Taupo," WTC president Ben Fertic said.
"Ironman New Zealand holds a special place in the WTC Ironman family as the first licensed qualifying event for the Ironman world championship and also the event with the biggest number of international competitors.
Ironman New Zealand is the biggest annual one-day international sporting event in this country.
Saturday's race, one of 20 official qualifying events for the Ironman world championships in Hawaii, attracted 1490 entrants from 41 countries.
