KEY POINTS:
Jubilation all round for Mt Albert Grammar on Saturday as they won an unprecedented treble in Auckland secondary school sport.
While the Kevin Fallon-coached soccer team went into their home game against Macleans as hot favourites to clinch a fourth straight league crown - led by another Mark Withers hat-trick, they duly won 6-0 - there was not quite the same confidence in the netball and rugby camps.
They need not have worried.
The netballers set the ball rolling, beating Epsom Girls Grammar 39-28 at Auckland Netball headquarters - breaking a run of three straight runners-up spots.
Their win, in the first grand final (previous winners had been declared after round-robin play), was the first by a co-educational school since Mt Roskill Grammar won in 1983.
The final was significant on another count. It was the first time since 1986 that Auckland Girls Grammar had not finished in the top two. Mt Albert Grammar coach Te Aroha Keenan remembers that well - she coached AGGS 21 years ago.
That title in the bag, the netballers now turn their sights on tomorrow's Waitakere secondary schools final against Massey High and the chance of a second title. Beyond that, next week's upper North Island championships and then the national titles.
The netballers quickly headed to Eden Park to support their 1st XV in their bid for a first 1A title since 1991.
Mt Albert, coached by Charlie McAlister and Jack Huch, outscored favourites De La Salle four tries to two to win 27-18.
