He had a similar first year in GP2 and is looking to repeat his feat of 2012, when he won the GP3 title, and be the driver to beat this year. He'll have his work cut out in a highly contested championship, but Evans has never been shy of hard work and a challenge.
"It's all starting to ramp up and the bulls**t stops now," said Evans. "I'm feeling really good this weekend and feel positive and mentally strong.
"Testing went well and I'm confident we can do well this season, but since it's motor racing you never really know.
"I feel that we're going to have the consistency this season that we need to get points at every round. We've got a really, really good platform at the start of the season to work with that is very important, which is something we lacked last year, " he said.
"This is it for me this year and I really have to perform if I want to move up into F1 so I'm going to give it everything I've got."
If the Abu Dhabi test a few weeks ago is anything to go by, Evans is in with a good chance of getting his tilt at another international title off to a flying start.
He was able to get inside the top five for most of the test sessions and was also the second fastest car twice.
Evans missed being competitive last year and the results so far have been encouraging.
It's a great fillip for the young man to know he's got a good car underneath him that isn't suddenly going to do something unexpected. He's certainly looking forward to being able to battle at the front of the pack again.
"Testing was really good for my confidence as I was really up against it last year. Don't get me wrong, we had some good races and I'm really proud of what I achieved. I also understand that having really good testing doesn't mean we won't struggle at some time in the championship.
"The car is more driveable, more balanced and more forgiving than last year's one. It's a lot more predictable, which is important from a driver's point of view. These cars are pretty basic and hard to drive while being super powerful, and there aren't any driver aids - not even power steering - so they're really physical to drive," said Evans.
This year will be a bit of a tester for the Kiwi as the talk in the paddock is that the field is the strongest it's ever been, with a good eight to 10 drivers who will be capable of winning the feature race each weekend.
This weekend's opening race will be fast and furious, as they've all been testing at the circuit.
