Driving his own race, Dixon survived a stop-start affair to be running up the front with a few laps to go and looked good for his first win of the season. However, Ryan Hunter-Reay pulled a fast one on the field with a late tyre change to rocket to front on the closing laps and take the win with Josef Newgarden and Kannan forcing Dixon into fourth.
Scott Dixon
"Sneaky little buggers they are. I couldn't believe it," said a bemused Dixon after the race. "Good strategy and credit obviously to Andretti and Hunter-Reay taking the win there.
"Our Chevy Target cars were fantastic tonight. I just couldn't believe TK [Tony Kanaan] ran a hell of a race. He must have led 250 laps or something. We had to work on our car a lot. We just gave them a race there for a little while, led some laps, but I burned the front tires off my car.
"Credit to the team, but we just came short there by a couple of spots. Hopefully we will come back at Toronto and get some victories."
Cassidy in the points
Toyota Racing Series champion Nick Cassidy is finally getting to grips with his Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 litre series and bagged a bundle of points at the latest round of his championship. The series was at Nurburgring, Germany, over the weekend and Cassidy showed some scintillating pace to qualify third for race one.
As the lights went out the Kiwi was swamped and slipped down to eighth where he held station until the end of the race to get his first points in six races. With the car working well and with his confidence up, Cassidy qualified on the front row for race two alongside Dennis Olsen.
Again not quite making the most of his qualifying effort, the Kiwi could only manage to finish fifth. Despite not making it on to the podium Cassidy is pleased to get some points on the board.
"I went for the lead into the first turn but unfortunately ran wide on a damp track," said Cassidy. "Overall a fantastic weekend and I'm proud of my performance in qualifying and glad to leave with no regrets."
