This weekend's final round of the 2009 Vantage New Zealand Rally Championship, Rally of Nelson, will be a dust up between points leader Hayden Paddon and the only driver with a mathematical chance of catching him, Emma Gilmour. Paddon has a lead of 61 points over Gilmour and it would take a serious problem on both days to gift the title to Gilmour as there are 74 points up for grabs.

Hartley fights back
After a fraught year in European Formula Three championship, Kiwi Brendon Hartley is starting to turn things around, beginning with a recent win at Brands Hatch in the latest round of the F3 series. Hartley is racing at the Nurburgring, Germany this weekend in the World Series by Renault and is confident he can regain the form that saw him win the European Formula Renault title in 2007.
Vatanen revs up
Former rally great and world champion, Ari Vatanen, has revved up his cause to replace the departing Max Mosley as the head of the FIA. Five international senate members are so far backing him in October's election.
Formula One thaw
Despite a freeze on engine development in Formula One, the disgraced Renault team were allowed to modify their engine in the off-season. Teams are getting ready to discuss another unfreeze because there are six Mercedes-powered cars in the 20-car field.
Spies move mooted
News is swirling around that Ben Spies, leading this year's World Superbike Championship, may move to MotoGP next year rather than wait until 2011. He has been linked to the Tech 3 Yamaha team who also have Colin Edwards as a rider. Spies is on course to win his, and Yamaha's first World Superbike title.
