LONDON: Three times Formula One champion Jackie Stewart won a vote yesterday to remain at the helm of the British Racing Drivers' Club that owns the Silverstone circuit.
The BRDC said that an extraordinary general meeting of members at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix, voted to retain the 65-year-old Scot as president and board member.
"My integrity was attacked by a number of members of the club," said Stewart, who had denounced a "very vicious" campaign against him.
"I have defended it and I am pleased that I received support to continue as president and a director. We must now work to build a united club working for the future good of Silverstone and British motorsport."
Yesterday's vote marked the closing stages of a dispute between Stewart and former chairman Ray Bellm after on-off negotiations last year to secure the future of the British Grand Prix, usually held at the circuit.
Stewart had wanted a three-year deal while Bellm signed a five-year one with Formula One's commercial supremo, Bernie Ecclestone.
Bellm was later dismissed.
