KEY POINTS:
V8 Supercar driver Jack Perkins returns to the racetrack this weekend behind the wheel of a go-kart at Port Melbourne. Perkins was forced to stop driving the Jack Daniel's Holden when he was diagnosed with type one diabetes this year. He will race with teammate Shane Price in the four-hour endurance race along with fellow V8 drivers Jason Richards and Alan Gurr.
New team stymied
British team ProDrive will not be the 12th team on the Formula 1 grid next season. The team, who were to run cars and engines supplied by McLaren and Mercedes, pulled out when a legal challenge was posted by Williams. F1 rules are to be changed next year to reduce costs and will allow teams to use cars built and designed by others.
Helping hand
Organisers of the 2008 Otago Rally are again offering a generous assistance package (more than $1000) for overseas competitors who bring their cars to race. With the popularity of the rally, and in particular the Dunlop International Classic Rally of Otago, increasing every year, the limited number of packages are expected to go quickly.
Scheme goes belly up
After training almost 50,000 young drivers over the past 15 years, the Prodrive Driver Education Programme run by MotorSport New Zealand and its member clubs has been suspended. Lack of financial certainty meant they couldn't provide staff with enough security. The programme was offered free to senior secondary school students.
