Motorsport: Yamaha ace thrilled to be back after crash

The crutches are now just a dark and distant memory for Wairarapa's Jamie Galway.

The 21-year-old Yamaha ace is thrilled to be back on a bike after spending nearly seven months on the sidelines following his horrific crash at the fourth round of five in last season's national superbike championships at Manfeild in February.

And it was the same Manawatu track, on the outskirts of Feilding, that Galway chose to make his comeback to the sport, practising recently ahead of the fifth round of six in this year's Victoria Motorcycle Club Actrix Winter Series.

Horrific weather meant that practice was cut short before racing proper could begin, but Galway still managed to enjoy some valuable track time on Friday.

"I broke my femur in two places in the crash and that put me on crutches for quite some time. I needed lots of physio and swimming to get my fitness back but I'm feeling pretty good again now.

"I had my 2008-model Yamaha R6 in the garage and just rolled it out this weekend to go racing again. I've done nothing to the bike but it was great.

"I was a little bit hesitant when I first went out on the track but it didn't take long to feel comfortable again. I am just easing my way back in to the competition but I've lost none of my desire.

"I'm still undecided whether I will race the nationals this coming season but I would love to race the Yamaha at the top level again."

The five-round nationals kick off at Timaru in January.
