Motorsport: Whincup fastest before shootout

Defending V8 Supercar champion Jamie Whincup has set the pace heading into the top-ten shootout for race one at the Hamilton 400.

Whincup has clocked the fastest lap in the first two qualifying segments, just ahead of fellow Ford drivers Mark Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes.

There will not be any New Zealanders in the top-ten shootout with Shane van Gisbergen the best performer in 11th place.

Fellow Kiwi Jason Richards provided the heart in mouth moment of qualifying when he clipped the tyre wall at the chicane and was lucky to escape with just minor damage

The top-ten shootout has just got underway.
