Motorsport: Two national titles for top Waikato rider

It was two from two for Mangakino's Kayne Lamont at the weekend's 2010 New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships, just outside Blenheim.

The 16-year-old Yamaha rider remarkably collected both the championships' major crowns - winning both the 15-16 years' 125cc and 14-16 years' 250cc divisions - as he put on a performance over the three days of the Leatt-sponsored championship that some described as "mind-blowing".

"Kayne Lamont was simply awesome," said one of his main rivals, fellow 16-year-old Scott Canham.

Rotorua's Canham (Kawasaki) was magnanimous in defeat, the young man thrilled to finish a career-high runner-up in the 250cc class in just his third season of racing.

Lamont qualified fastest in the 250cc class and second fastest - behind Rangiora's Isaiah McGoldrick (KTM) - in the 125cc class during Friday's preliminary action on Friday and then finished 1-1-2-2-2 in his three 125cc class outings on Saturday and Sunday. He was more dominant in the 250cc class, winning all five races.

"I'd never seen this track before, except for watching a video of it on the internet, but I loved it," said Lamont afterwards. "It reminded me of Woodville and the North Island Motocross Championships track at Hastings.

"I was neck-and-neck with Isaiah McGoldrick in both classes but he crashed a few times. "It's a pretty good feeling to win two national titles in one season."

Lamont now prepares for another tilt at the Junior World Motocross Championships, set for France in August.

Other title winners at the weekend were Atiamuri's Dion Picard (12-14 years' 125cc class); Otago's Cody Scott (12-16 years' 150cc class); Rangiora's Micah McGoldrick (13-16 years' 85cc class); Hamilton's Josiah Natzke (11-12 years' 85cc class) and Taupo's Wyatt Chase (8-10 years' 85cc class).
