The mother of Formula One motor racing drivers Michael and Ralf Schumacher died in a hospital in Cologne, Germany, last night.
Elisabeth Schumacher, 55, had been in a coma following an emergency operation.
Despite the news, the brothers were both expected to line up for the San Marino Grand Prix early today (NZ time). Five-times world champion Michael was due to start the race in pole position, with Ralf second.
They had flown from Imola to Cologne to visit their mother after securing the two top spots on the grid for the San Marino race. She was taken to hospital last week after collapsing, suffering from internal bleeding.
The FIA issued a statement extending its sympathy to the brothers.
