KEY POINTS:
When aspiring motorsport mechanic Sam Cosgrove got a call from Greg Murphy informing him he would be working on his VE Holden V8 Supercar this weekend, he couldn't believe his luck.
Cosgrove said he was at work when he got the call from Murphy. "Greg told me that I would be working with the team at Hamilton courtesy of the Motor Trade Association (MTA).
"I am absolutely rapt, over the moon; it's something that I have aspired to do my entire life. I've always been involved in cars, I love motorsport and Greg is one of my favourite drivers."
Cosgrove, who works at the Toyota dealership in Te Awamutu, was given the opportunity to work with Murphy thanks to the MTA's involvement in the motorsport industry.
MTA marketing manager Ian Stronach said: "MTA has a programme to help find and nurture New Zealand's top apprentice technicians.
"We want young people to know that the automotive industry can be a fun, dynamic industry and that there is a glamorous side that they can aspire to."
Cosgrove couldn't wait to be a part of the Murphy Sprint Gas Racing team.
"Greg is definitely a driver I look up to. I admire his attitude towards driving, he is always smiling and he speaks his mind. I think he's a very honest racer.
"To be involved with the team, watching and learning from the pros will be something I will not forget.
"Hopefully this will help me enter the sport some time in the future."
