KEY POINTS:
BATHURST - Holden pilot Garth Tander hopes the Bathurst 1000 always involves a top ten shootout.
Later today the cream of the V8 Supercar field will test their mettle over one solo flying lap at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit in what most drivers consider the highlight of the year, as far as qualifying goes.
For every other round except the Sandown 500, qualifying is conducted in a three-tier format where drivers get multiple opportunities to produce that perfect lap while sharing the track.
"I think we're at the home of the top ten shootout, aren't we, we're back at Bathurst," said Tander, the equal favourite with Ford rival Mark Winterbottom to take pole today.
"This is where it originated and I think it should always be at this race."
Meanwhile, Holden driver Paul Morris is considering a start from pit-lane in a bid to conserve fuel in tomorrow's race.
The 39-year-old had a disappointing result in yesterday's qualifying session, leaving he and team-mate Steve Ellery languishing in 27th.
"I'm seriously thinking about starting the race from pit lane," said Morris.
"We're already near the back of the grid so if we do go with the pit-lane option it's not going to cost us many positions.
"The big plus with this strategy is you can save a couple of laps of fuel, which may make a difference at the end of the day. It also means we won't get caught up in any dramas on the first lap."
There will be a one hour practice session today at 10am AEST before the shootout at 3.40pm AEST.
