Earlier Dixon told media that it was a 'rough ride' into the wall.
"Just a little beaten up there. It was definitely a rough ride," Dixon said after getting back to pitlane.
"I am just bummed for the team. We had a great shot.
"We got a little loose on the first stint there but they dialed it in and we were starting to make some progress.
"Overall I just think we were a little bit light on downforce but later in the race that would have been the right move to have.
"I'm glad everyone is ok - it was a wild ride for sure. A big thanks to Dallara and everybody with the safety standards we have now."
Dixon had to make a split second decision about which way to move to try and avoid Howard's car but went the wrong way.
"I was hoping Jay was going to stay against the wall but obviously with the impact it started to turn down but I had already picked that way to go and there was nowhere else to try and avoid him," he said.
"I'm glad he's ok too.
"You just have to believe in the safety progress we have had over the last many years."
The race was red-flagged as the debis was cleaned off the track.
Takuma Sato went on to win the race from veteran Penske driver Helio Castroneves. Sato made the crucial pass on the three-time winner with three laps remaining and held on to drink the quart of milk in victory lane.
Sato, the Andretti Autosport driver, came very close to winning the 2012 running of the Indianapolis 500 but was beaten on the final lap by Dario Franchitti.
"Unbelievable feeling. It was a tough race," Sato said.
"It is beautiful - I grabbed something I left behind in 2012."
Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso was right in the mix for victory until his Honda engine blew with 20 laps remaining.
Other leading contenders that failed to finish included Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden.
Earlier Dixon made a safe start at the Brickyard, leading the field through the opening laps. He was passed by Ganassi teammate Tony Kanaan and the pair worked together to remain at the front of the field through the opening stint.
Dixon's car became loose and very hard to drive in the last couple of laps before his first pitstop and he dropped a couple of spots but got back up to speed upon completion of the stop.
There was a massive crowd on hand on Memorial Day in the United States.
