Porsche has announced they will exit the World Endurance Championship LMP1 category at the end of the current season leaving their Kiwi drivers in limbo.
New Zealanders Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber won the Le Mans 24 Hour race this year alongside German teammate Timo Bernhard and currently top the WEC standings.
But the German manufacturer has long been rumoured to be follow Audi's exit of a year ago.
It was announced overnight that Porsche would shut down its LMP1 hybrid program, which has yielded two WEC titles and three-straight Le Mans 24 Hour wins to move into Formula E.
The manufacturer said their current drivers will remain under contract but no further information was provided as to what the plans were for them.
The move is a devastating development for the WEC but a significant coup for Formula E.
