Motorsport: No let off from Marquez despite title win

Newly-crowned world MotoGP champion Marc Marquez plans to enjoy the Australian race on Sunday but he certainly won't be taking it easy.

The Spaniard clinched his third world MotoGP title with victory win at Japan's Twin Ring Motegi circuit last weekend.

And now the Honda star aims to celebrate in style with a win at the sweeping Phillip Island circuit he called one of his favourite two tracks in the world.

"The first approach is to try to enjoy it ... Phillip Island is one of my favourite circuits, it's really nice, but the weather can be tricky," Marquez told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday.

"It's a really fast circuit - it's special.

"We will try to enjoy it and of course to be on the podium or on top of the podium will be a nice way to celebrate."

Marquez has fond memories of the track having finished ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Iannone and Valentino Rossi to claim last year's Australian MotoGP after a thrilling final lap dogfight.

While there won't be a live world championship on the line this time, Marquez is intent on chasing greatness.

The 23-year-old is the youngest man to win three world titles in the top class.

He is flattered by comparisons to Australian great Mick Doohan, whose mark of five world championships in the top class - also all for Honda - is in the Spaniard's sights.

"It's nice when people compare you to Mick Doohan," he said.

"I know him very well and it's something amazing. It feels like extra motivation to continue this.

"In the beginning it was really strange for me and it's still special for me that people make these comparisons.

"It gives me extra motivation."

American veteran Nicky Hayden will ride the other Repsol Honda at Phillip Island after Dani Pedrosa broke his collarbone in Japan.
