Manawatu driver Sam Murray is the surprise leader after the opening stage of the International Rally of Whangarei.
Pre-event favourites Australian Cody Crocker and New Zealand champion Richard Mason were fourth and sixth fastest respectively after the first test near Paparoa in the Kaipara region.
The drivers complete three special stages in Kaipara before returning to Whangarei for a super special stage, and repeat the same stages after service this afternoon.
