Motorsport: Maskovich looking to add silverware to strong season

Midget racer Brock Maskovich has enjoyed arguably his best season to date but he hasn't managed to collect the major silverware to showcase his form this summer.

He hopes to change that Saturday night at the New Zealand Midget Grand Prix at Vodafone Speedway Western Springs.

"The Midget Grand Prix is pretty big," Maskovich told The Herald. "It is known as one of the top three races in the North Island. You have the North Island Championships, the New Zealand Championships and the New Zealand Grand Prix.

"It is quite a big one and one you really want to win."

The Auckland-based driver had high hopes heading into the National Championships in Huntly last month but had to watch the Americans dominate the night.

Spencer Bayston led compatriot Zach Duam home in a one-two finish while the best of the New Zealanders was Michael Pickens in third.

Maskovich wasn't in the hunt but he expects to find conditions more to his liking at his home track.

"NZ Champs was a hard meeting at Huntly with the track and that but anytime we hit Western Springs we know we are in with a good shot," he said.

"We always do the same process each night no matter how big the race is."

It has been a successful summer however for Maskovich, who has consistently found himself at the pointy end of the field come the end of each meeting.

"I would probably rank this our best season so far," he said. "I think we haven't been on the podium twice out of every meeting we have been to.

"I think it comes down to our preparation in the off-season. We really stepped up our game in preparing things and getting the car ready at home, which I think is a big thing so nothing breaks on the night."

The Heritage Shield will be on the line for all classes to compete in while some beautifully restored midget cars of yesteryear will be on display.
