KEY POINTS:
Ireland's Adam Carroll destroyed the competition in qualifying for tomorrow's A1GP sprint race, setting a new lap record in the process.
He then broke it again during qualifying for the feature race, gaining a double pole for tomorrow.
The previous record for an A1GP car around the Taupo track was 1:14.679, and was set on a faster circuit layout by Swiss driver Neel Jani in 2007.
Series leader Carroll's sprint time this afternoon was 1:14.507. His next time was a stunning 1:14.411.
The fiery performance puts Carroll on pole with Dutch driver Robert Doornbos and Portuguese driver Filipe Albuquerque in second and third - unusually duplicating the top three for both races.
Carroll described Taupo as a "tricky little circuit."
"You put new tyres on and you've just got to push hard and hope that you're on top at the end," the Irishman said at a press conference at the event.
New Zealand driver Chris van der Drift managed a sixth place for the sprint, after the first half of the session saw him stuck back in 16th on the grid. He will start tenth in the feature race, next to Lebanon on the grid. Set during sprint qualifying, the 22-year-old's fastest lap was 1:15.457.
