Rally New Zealand chairman Morrie Chandler was elected president of the World Rally Championship Commission at a meeting of the FIA World Motorsport Council in Paris.
New Zealand, which hosted a round of the world rally championship, could not afford to rest on its laurels in the face of intense competition from countries such as Ireland, Norway and Jordan, he said.
Cyprus, Turkey and Australia had been culled from next year's world championship calendar.
The Rally of New Zealand will be held in November this year and from August 31 to September 2 next year.
