KEY POINTS:
A1'S junior development team leader Daniel Gaunt showed why he is one of New Zealand's best young drivers with a dominant win in the second Toyota Racing Series race at the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport meeting at Taupo's Motorsport Park yesterday.
Pole winner Ben Harford and second row starter Hamad Al Fardan made it a three-way battle for the first turn, but recent Lady Wigram Trophy winner Gaunt - who shared the front row with Harford - kept his head and took advantage when the other two slid wide.
From that point, the defending Toyota Racing Series champion and current series leader Gaunt was never headed, crossing the finishing line after 10 hard laps, 0.904s in front of Al Fardan and 2.493s ahead of his young A1 Team.NZL teammate Shane Van Gisbergen.
"Mine was a solid rather than brilliant start but Turn 1 was where it all happened," Gaunt said. "I was on the outside but I got a good run on Ben, pushed deep under brakes and sneaked up the inside when he and Hamad ran wide."
