Motorsport: Fabian Coulthard leads Kiwi 1-2 finish at Phillip Island

The only person who could stop Scott McLaughlin's complete dominance at round four of the Supercars' championship at Phillip Island was his teammate Fabian Coulthard.

The Kiwi has made a bit of a habit of following the defending series champion home of late, but went one better this time by picking up his first win in 11months. True to form, McLaughlin started on pole and lead the race form the off, only to be relegated to second after the first round of pitstops.

"I'm pumped," said Coulthard straight after the race. "Awesome for all my guys. We work so hard as a team.

"Scott's had a lot of wins this year which is a credit to all those guys, they've done a fantastic job.

"To finally get one [a win] is awesome, I can't thank my crew enough, Shell V-Power, all my sponsors. It's fantastic.

"You know, I was a little bit shocked, I'm not sure what happened to Scott on one of his out laps because I was expecting a red car to go blowing past.

"Thankfully we had great pit stops, had a fast car, looked after it and the tyres. It ticked all the boxes."

McLaughlin held steady behind Coulthard over the closing laps never letting his teammate open the gap, or being able to close onto his bumper. He now leads the series by a healthy 124 points from Coulthard with Chaz Mostert in third 243 points off the pace.

"I'm really happy with my weekend, it's been a big week for those guys away, two weeks on the road and to come away with three one-twos is massive," McLaughlin said.

"We'll have a little think about it in the debrief, talk about a few things, but the idea is for the team to win and we've done that on multiple occasions in this past couple of weeks."

Following the two Kiwis home was Erebus Penrite Racing's Anton De Pasquale who claimed his first podium in his burgeoning Supercars career. Triple Eight Red Bull Holden Racing's mediocre weekend continued with Shane van Gisbergen rolling home in seventh with seven-time champion Jamie Whincup managing, by his standards, a shoddy 12th.

After back-to-back race weekends the category has a bit of a breather before the next round in Perth, May 2-4.
