Kiwi Scott Dixon has given his Indycar title bid a massive shot in the arm with a second-place finish at the penultimate race at Watkins Glen in New York.
It lifts the four-time champion to within three points of series leader Josef Newgarden with just the double points race at Sonoma Raceway in a fortnight remaining.
Penske driver Newgarden made contact with the wall as he exited the pits late in the race and was forced back in to make repairs. The American finished down in 18th place.
Alexander Rossi took the chequered flag at the Watkins Glen road circuit as Dixon attempted to chase him down in the closing stages. Last year's Indianapolis 500 winner had enough to hold off the New Zealander and secure victory.
Ryan Hunter-Reay completed the podium with title contender Helio Castroneves fourth.
Dixon has a good record at Sonoma - the Californian road circuit - and will drive for fifth championship and his first since 2015.
