Scott Dixon has fallen just short of a second Indianapolis 500 title, finishing second after leading late in the race.
The race was won by his teammate Dario Franchitti, the Scot's third title.
Dixon, who won at the Brickyard in 2008, led with two laps remaining before being passed by Franchitti and Takuma Sato.
Sato then crashed on the final lap while trying to pass Franchitti for the win as the race finished on a yellow flag.
Fellow Kiwi Wade Cunningham withdrew from the race due to mechanical problems.
