Motorsport: Davison expected to race

Will Davison is expected to return to Supercars this weekend with the Holden driver close to recovered from injuries suffered in the competition's all-time biggest pileup.

The Bathurst 1000 champion is expecting to suit up in the Phillip Island Super Sprint, beginning

on Friday, after escaping with minor injuries in the 12-car collision that led to race one of the Tasmanian round abandoned.

Davison was rushed to hospital after he was heavily winded in the second lap crash at the beginning of the Symmons Plains straight.

"I am doing everything in my powers to be in the car at Phillip Island this weekend," he said.

"I am still pretty stiff and sore first thing in the morning but once I get moving I am right."

Davison was one of four drivers to miss the second instalment of the round two event with the Tekno Autosport pilot also suffering back damage when he collided with a parked James Courtney.

The total damage bill for the crash was estimated to be more than $5 million with four cars ruined in the smash.

Davison was the only driver that needed medical attention following the race-ending crash.

The multiple race winning driver strapped down in a simulator on Tuesday in a bid to prove his fitness before the championship resumes on Friday.

"I've been on the simulator," Davison said.

"That was another step forward in my rehab. I felt pretty good afterwards."

Holden driver Courtney and Nissan driver Rick Kelly suffered major damage to their cars during the collision.

Courtney is expected to drive a 2015 model race car with his Commodore still to be assessed.

"It is the car Jack Perkins and I won the Gold Coast in," Courtney said.

"So it is a goer. All the race gear has come out of the other car and has gone into it. The car was pretty damaged in that crash. I was fine but the car was not so fine. It is back on the jig now and we don't know whether it can be rescued yet. It certainly couldn't for Phillip Island with the short turnaround."

Kelly's Nissan Altima has already been written off and the former champion will be forced to use a "spare" this weekend in a situation that was called "less than ideal". Kelly was also collected by Davison.
