New Zealand driver Wade Cunningham's hopes of a top three finish in this year's Indy Lights championship series in the United States took a knock this morning (NZ time) after he was sent spinning out by a rival at the latest round in northern California.
The former Aucklander was running ninth at Infineon Raceway's road course when was hit from behind by Colombia's Sebastien Saavedra.
"One minute he's in my mirrors the next I get hit from behind and I'm watching him and everyone behind him go by," a disappointed Cunningham said.
Although Cunningham recovered and resumed racing, he was only able to finish 12th.
With two rounds to go, Cunningham, who won the title in 2005, is fifth overall on 354 points.
American JR Hildebrand leads with 473 points followed by Saavedra on 383, Australian James Davison 376, Canadian James Hinchcliffe 361.
Cunningham will be looking for a top finish at next weekend's penultimate round on the high speed Chicagoland oval, one of his favourite tracks.
